Half Term News letter
No. 123 July 2008

Dear Parents and Friends,

This half term has been extremely busy but very productive!

Our Key stage 2 SAT results were very good!
A Level 4 grade is awarded to children working at a perfectly average year 6 level; level 5 is awarded to children working above the level of an average year 6 child.
In English 99% of children gained level 4 or above with 55% achieving level 5.
In Science 100% of children gained level 4 or above with 44 % achieving level 5.
In Maths 55% gained level 4 with 22% achieving level 5

As always the results showed us nothing new and put your children under great stress. SAT testing is being discontinued at some point and we hope it will be sooner rather than later!

School trips
On Tuesday, 3rd June Endeavour and Enterprise visited the Anglo Saxon village at West Stow as part of their Anglo Saxon studies.

On Wednesday 11th June Year 3 children visited Bury St Edmunds as part of their humanities and RE curriculum. Father Patrick gave a guided tour of the Cathedral followed by a visit to the open market in the square.

Satellites took a walk around Bawburgh on Friday, 20th June to look at the different types of houses in the village and how the river wound its way through the village as part of their Local Studies.

As part of being a finalist in the recent Norfolk Food and Farming competition we agreed to display our work at the Royal Norfolk Show. Consequently, I thought that the whole school would enjoy visiting the show on Wednesday 25th June at greatly reduced rates!
We enjoyed a wonderful day, great weather; some of us even got to see a glimpse of Prince Harry! Some of us didn’t! Our stand in the Education Marquee was manned magnificently by representatives from Enterprise on both of the show days. They were complimented on the confident and mature way in which they spoke to members of the public.
Thank you to everyone who helped by taking their child and others around the show and for completing your ‘trails’ as we managed to receive £171.00 back, which helped significantly towards offsetting the cost!

Crucial Crew
As part of their Personal and Social Development Year 6 children visited Easton College on Thursday 10th July for an interactive safety initiative called ‘Crucial Crew’. The organisations and services participating in this event included the Norfolk Police, Norfolk Fire Service, St. Johns Ambulance, Youth Offending Team, The Matthew Project, Easton College, EDF Energy, South Norfolk Environmental Health and H.M. Coastguard. The event recreates scenes of crime and danger in a controlled environment so that children can experience realistic situations in order to raise their own awareness of how they can increase their own and others’ safety.

Beach trip
Comets and Satellites had a worrying week listening to the bad weather warnings for their beach trip day! They did visit the beach at West Runton on Friday, 11th July and enjoyed a fantastic day with no sign of rain whatsoever! Mrs. Fleckney introduced the children to Rock Pool dipping, whilst Mrs. Beverley and Miss Leake ensured that everyone enjoyed the beach and shops safely.

Festival of Voices
Thank you to all of you who came to support your child on Tuesday, 17th June at St Andrews Hall in Norwich for our choral singing. It was a tense morning practising our songs with ten other schools, this was followed by an exciting afternoon of song which our children really enjoyed. Some of these songs were repeated at our end of term ‘Celebration’ morning.

Comets
Our new Comets, transferring to us in September, visited the school for two mornings as part of their induction programme. They also enjoyed a Teddy Bears’ Picnic last Friday. Miss Cooke is very impressed with their maturity and sense of humour already!!

Work Experience Week
Year 6 children began their week on 30th June. The week aims to build up the children’s confidence in discussing issues with business people. It also enables them to look at different working environments such as offices, working from home and to see the ‘pros and cons’ of each. We also looked at people who were salaried, self employed and volunteers.

P.E.
A national focus to ensure that all year 6 children are confident swimmers gave Enterprise an opportunity to develop their skills on Fridays at Drayton Junior School. This was organised for us by Costessey High School and was much enjoyed!

Children from Endeavour and Enterprise took part in a Cricket Tournament at Great Witchingham on Monday, 9th June. They thoroughly enjoyed the a very competitive day. Each competitor was presented with a certificate and medal for taking part.

To further develop our batting skills we have taken advantage of the services of coach from the Norfolk Cricket Board who has run two fun sessions for Endeavour and Enterprise this half term.

Get Fit Kids
On Thursday, 17th July we all took part in a very lively Keep Fit session as part of the nationwide scheme to gain money for a variety of children’s charities. These sessions are always thoroughly enjoyed by the children and due to your generosity provide much needed funds.

Friends of Bawburgh School
The Friends of Bawburgh School are an essential part of our TEAM providing much needed funds for the school. I would like to thank them all for their efforts this year which, I know have been at times, rather frustrating!! However, without them the school would be a much poorer place both financially and spiritually.
The intrepid Friends hosted a “Magical Ed” Party after school on Friday, 20th June, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all those children who attended.
The Friends’ annual Summer Fair was held on Tuesday, 15th July from 2.30p.m. to 4p.m. with just over £600 being raised. The Friends would like to thank parents for their generosity and support.
Next term perhaps some of our newer parents would like to share some of the organisational work? ALL parents are welcome to Friends’ meetings, look out for the September meeting!!

Visitors to Comets
Steve Hammond, our countryside ranger visited our younger children to help in their Space project by helping with the making of rockets!

PC Mike Larkin, one of our community policemen, talked to Comets about “Stranger Danger” and the role of the policeman on our streets. The Children very much enjoyed looking at what a policeman has to wear when on duty. It was a shame that both policemen were called out on the afternoon of the Summer Fair and couldn’t bring their car (and siren)!

Special Luncheon Birthday Tables
Clive has been very busy with special birthday tables this half term -25 in total! He is delighted with their success. If your child is celebrating a birthday next term, please pick up a Birthday Lunch Request Form from the foyer and see Clive to arrange the menu. The cost is just £2.25 per child.

School Meals
The price of school meals will increase to £2.00 each from September. Take-outs will increase to £2.75.
Cartons of fruit juice or milk for children to buy at 20p each at lunchtime was introduced in May and has been successful. This will continue from September. Drinks are to be paid for as they are taken at lunch times.
Thursday Tuck Shop will also continue, but instead of pre-ordering tuck, please could your child bring in the money on the day to buy directly from the trolley.

Cycling Proficiency Lessons
Mr Cornwell held a series of lessons in June. We found his idea of holding three, two hour classes a great success. Rhiannon Vincent and Laura Quinn successfully completed the course. Well done both of you.

Spree Voucher Books
Thank you to all those parents who purchased a book, and thank you to everyone who returned unwanted books. We managed to sell 14 books generating a profit of £56 to the School.

School Photos
Class and whole school photos were taken on Monday, 16th June and have been handed out to those of you who ordered a copy.

Parent Workshops
Thank you to those of you who attended the Tracking Workshop. I hope that you used your knowledge when meeting with your child’s class teacher after receiving your report.
As a result of this workshop it transpired that, although no-one had been to see me, our communication needs to be better. Consequently, next year EVERY child will have a ‘Communications Book’ in which will be a timetable; sections for the additional support that your child is receiving; health information for you to keep us updated on any medical conditions; the maths, phonic and English groups that your child is in; the termly plans of work that your child will be taught so that you can help at home; and any tests that your child takes so that you can see how they did! I would appreciate comments on the prototype in the first days of next term so that they can be sent out on the first Friday. Please let me know if you would like to help with this.

Celebration of Achievement

Bawburgh’s Got Talent 2008
Following a gruelling round of auditions, we enjoyed a really fantastic competition on Friday, 18th July proving that Bawburgh really does have talent. We had our very own Mrs Beverley-Cowell and Amanda Cooke-Holden (complete with a box of tissues) as judges. The event was hosted by Mrs Ant & Dec Staff. After a riotous round of acts, with much friendly heckling from the audience and some interesting performances from members of staff, the winner was announced as K-Pow (alias Billy Simmons). As a black belt, his amazing karate routine was just superb!!

Sports Afternoon
Despite dark clouds and chilly July winds we all enjoyed an invigorating Sports afternoon which left us a little ‘sand blasted’ but happy. The House Sports shield was presented to James Anthony who accepted it on behalf of Kett House.
